About Pierburg

Pierburg was founded in 1909 in Neuss, Germany, and is now part of Rheinmetall Automotive — one of the major German technology groups. The Pierburg name covers a tight set of high-engineering-content components: EGR valves and coolers, throttle bodies, exhaust gas recirculation systems, electric water pumps, vacuum pumps, secondary air pumps and fuel-delivery components. Pierburg is the OE supplier for many of these components on most German and several European manufacturers.

EGR systems: where Pierburg is most relevant

The exhaust gas recirculation valve is one of the most failure-prone components on modern diesels. The valve sits in the path of hot, sooty exhaust gas and progressively coats with carbon — eventually sticking partially open (causing limp-mode and rough running) or partially closed (causing emissions test failure). Modern EGR valves are electronically actuated with position feedback, so the replacement has to be specifically calibrated to the engine's ECU strategy.

Pierburg is the OE supplier for EGR valves on most VAG, BMW, Mercedes, Ford Europe and PSA diesels. The aftermarket part is the direct OE equivalent — same actuator, same calibration, same connector — meaning the ECU sees no behavioural difference from the original.

Vacuum pumps and electric water pumps

For brake-vacuum pumps (driven off the camshaft on diesels) and electric coolant pumps (increasingly common on modern petrol engines for thermal management), Pierburg is again the OE supplier on much of the parc. These are components where a generic aftermarket alternative often doesn't last — the seal compounds and the bearing tolerances matter.
