About Gates
Gates Corporation was founded in Denver, Colorado in 1911 and is today the largest manufacturer of automotive belts and hoses in the world. The Gates name is OE on nearly every modern petrol and diesel engine β the timing belt, accessory belt (poly-V), coolant hoses, fuel hoses and turbo hoses in your engine bay are very likely Gates parts with the OE manufacturer's logo on them.
Timing belts and timing belt kits
The most important Gates product for UK garages is the timing belt kit β a complete service kit that includes the timing belt, tensioner, idler pulleys and (where the engine uses one) the water pump. Modern engines often have the water pump driven by the timing belt, so it's fitted at the same time; the Gates kit bundles all the related parts so you change everything together rather than doing two jobs.
The PowerGrip range is the standard timing belt and the FleetRunner range is higher-spec for heavy use. Both are OE-equivalent and use the same materials and tooth profile as the original.
Accessory belts and coolant hoses
The Micro-V poly-V accessory belt (the "serpentine belt" that drives the alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor and water pump from a single belt) is another OE part on most modern engines. Gates also covers V-belts, coolant hoses, fuel hoses, vacuum hoses and turbo charge-air hoses.
When to choose Gates
For timing-belt service β Gates is one of the safest choices and the typical first port of call for independent garages. The complete kit means you change every related part together, avoiding a return visit when the water pump fails three months later.
For accessory belts and coolant hoses β Gates is OE-equivalent and the part fits and behaves like the original.
