About LuK

LuK was founded in 1965 in Bühl, Germany, and became one of the two dominant OE clutch suppliers in Europe (alongside Sachs). The company has been part of the Schaeffler Group since 1999 — Schaeffler being a German engineering giant that also owns INA (bearings) and FAG (ball bearings). LuK is the OE supplier of clutches and dual-mass flywheels to a long list of European manufacturers including VAG, BMW, Mercedes, Opel/Vauxhall, Ford Europe, Volvo and PSA.

Dual-mass flywheels: where LuK matters most

The dual-mass flywheel (DMF) was developed jointly by LuK and Sachs in the 1980s to reduce drivetrain vibration on diesel and high-torque petrol engines. A DMF replaces the single steel flywheel with a two-part assembly connected by internal springs, so torsional vibration from the engine isn't transmitted directly into the gearbox.

DMFs are wear items. They typically last around 100,000-150,000 miles on diesels and present as a chattering or whirring noise on idle. When the DMF is replaced, the OE-spec parts have to be matched precisely — the spring rates, the friction surfaces and the bolted hardware all matter. LuK's RepSet DMF kit is the OE-equivalent for many European cars and bundles the flywheel, clutch and release bearing in one matched assembly.

When to choose LuK

For clutch and DMF replacement on European vehicles where LuK was the OE supplier — confirm via the OE part-number cross-reference, but for most VAG, BMW, Vauxhall, Ford and PSA applications LuK is the direct OE choice. The RepSet DMF kit is more expensive than buying clutch and flywheel separately, but the matched calibration is what makes the new assembly last another 100k miles.
