About Hengst
Hengst Filtration is a German OE filter manufacturer founded in 1958, headquartered in Münster. The company is one of the dominant OE filter suppliers in Europe — Mercedes-Benz, BMW, VAG, Volvo, Porsche and several commercial-vehicle manufacturers all use Hengst-supplied filters as OE on a wide range of engines. The filtration goes beyond just oil and air: Hengst also supplies fuel filters (including the bowl-type diesel filters with integrated water separators) and cabin filters with activated-carbon layers.
Why filter brand matters more than people realise
An oil filter looks simple from the outside — a metal can with a paper element — but inside, the construction is heavily engineered. The bypass valve setting, the element-to-can gap, the relief flow rate, the burst pressure and the media quality all affect engine wear. A filter that bypasses too early lets unfiltered oil into the engine; one that bypasses too late can rupture under cold-start pressure. The OE specification gives the engine designer's target for all these values, and an OE-specification filter (like Hengst) meets it.
Fuel filters are even more critical on modern common-rail diesels. The HDi/CDTi/TDI fuel system runs at pressures that can destroy injectors and high-pressure pumps if water or dirt gets through. Hengst's fuel filters use OE-specification water-separator media that's calibrated to the specific fuel system.
When to choose Hengst
For service filters on Mercedes, BMW, VAG, Volvo, Porsche or any European premium vehicle where Hengst is the OE supplier — Hengst is the direct OE-equivalent and the safest filter choice. For older or non-European vehicles, the appropriate OE brand may differ (Denso for Toyota, Mahle for some German engines, Fram for older American applications).
